MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In just a week, several crews of the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services helped to rescue three animals from various rather tricky places, including a telephone pole and a stormwater drain.
The first call for help came through to the department early in the evening of 4 March, about a cat stuck atop a telephone pole in Jansen Street, D’Almeida.
Mossel Bay Municipality said the cat was safely back on the ground just 20 minutes after the fire department had received the call.
The second and third rescues both happened on 11 March.
The first call that day came through from the Garden Route SPCA Mossel Bay branch, about a parrot stranded high up in a tree and unable to free itself.
“The fire and rescue crews responded without delay and, through careful teamwork and patience, safely retrieved the bird. The parrot was reunited with its relieved owner, and the SPCA was present to ensure the animal’s well-being,” said the municipality.
Shortly afterwards, another call came through about a goat trapped in a drain at the corner of Heunis and Abraham streets, D’Almeida.
“Working in close co-operation with Water and Sanitation Services and the SPCA, the team carefully freed the distressed animal and ensured it was released unharmed and safely back on solid ground,” the municipality said.
“From treetops and telephone poles to stormwater drains, these rescues highlight the heart behind the uniform - a service that responds with compassion, professionalism and teamwork whenever help is needed,” it concluded.
