MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality’s Directorate of Infrastructure Services yesterday removed illegal electricity connections in parts of KwaNonqaba as part of regular operations to not only curb electricity theft, but also reduce the safety hazard caused to members of the public.
The municipality's spokesperson Cornelle Carstens said today, 16 August.
In reaction to the removal of illegal connections, members of the community last night, at about 19:30, blocked Nofemele Street and damaged a mini substation.
The mini substation was subsequently set alight and burnt out, causing a power outage affecting consumers.
The police's Public Order Policing Unit was deployed, along with municipal law enforcement and Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management staff.
Today, a small group of people from Nofemele Street and surrounds, mainly consisting of those in formal housing affected by the power outage, gathered and walked to the municipal building in Marsh Street.
The peaceful group was under the supervision of the Public Order Policing Unit and municipal law enforcement.
The group was addressed by the municipal manager, Colin Puren and the Director of Infrastructure Services, Dick Naidoo.
Municipal teams attended to the mini substation this morning and the damaged unit is being. It is estimated that electricity supply should be restored during the course of the evening.
