MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Locals have not simply stood by and watched as Covid-19 forces South Africans into lockdown.
Answering a call to action by the Mossel Bay Municipality to ensure there are enough face masks to go around to safeguard members of the community, a group from a local church have mobilised to help.
Members of New Life Church this week scurried to sew masks before the national lockdown started on 26 March.
"I saw the link on our neighbourhood watch and decided to ask a few ladies to help sew masks. We will probably make 240 masks. We are cutting today and sewing on Thursday," Sheila Wrigley told the Mossel Bay Advertiser on Wednesday afternoon.
"I think a lot of people are sewing masks as the material shop said yesterday they sold so much material for the project."
Made up masks were to be dropped off at the Fire and Rescue Department for distribution to those in the greater Mossel Bay community who need these masks the most.
"We are the people; we are the world; we can make a difference."
Additional fabric for sewing masks is also available, the Mossel Bay Municipality confirmed upon enquiry. "We request those who donate the masks to please place the masks individually in two plastic bags for reasons of hygiene," says municipal spokesperson, Nickey le Roux. Le Roux encouraged those able to continue sewing during lock down. Arrangements for drop off and collection can be made.
