MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay teen Morné Coetzer has made his family, friends and rugby teammates proud by being selected for the Boland team for Craven Week.
Morné (17), who is in the hostel at Drostdy Technical High School in Worcester, discovered his love and talent for rugby when he was in Grade One at Park Primary School, Mossel Bay.
His father, Pieter Coetzer, who lives and works in Mossel Bay, said Morné's selection for Craven Week was a long time coming and that he, family and friends were extremely proud when they heard he had been chosen for the Boland team.
Pieter said Morné had been expected to make the U13 South Western Districts team for Craven Week, but then the Covid-19 pandemic took place. He said that last year, his son had an injury and, therefore, did not make it into a team for Craven Week. However, this year, Morné was selected.
Morné's rugby coach at Drostdy Technical High, Tobie Botes, said Morné had put in a lot of hard work in the last year and had developed tremendously as a player.
"He has all the talent to take up rugby professionally," said Botes.
Pieter said Morné was expected to travel to Scotland or Ireland in September to meet the management of some rugby clubs.
He added that his son was also acade-mically gifted and hoped to study mecha-nical or civil engineering after matric.
Craven Week takes place in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, from 6 to 12 July.
