MOSSEL BAY NEWS - If Mossel Bay's junior mayor, Ayabonga Hlumkeza, had to choose between hamburgers or pizza, he would definitely bite into a hamburger.
Apart from this fun fact, Ayabonga has big dreams for the youth of Mossel Bay.
He believes in the adage: "Teach a man how to fish rather than providing a fish to the man."
Ayabonga wants to see the Junior Town Council embark on projects that will equip the youth of the greater Mossel Bay area with knowledge and teach them how to become ideal citizens.
Gender-based violence must be addressed, he says.
Ayabonga believes in the future Mossel Bay offers. "Mossel Bay is full of opportunities."
He says he wants the youth to be aware of the means and have the means to reach these opportunities.
He wants to ignite a spark in the youth to seek knowledge and be enthusiastic to learn and explore what is around them.
Ayabonga is the second of four children. He was born in a traditional African family originating from the Eastern Cape. He describes his family as one in which the members nurture and embrace one another.
He attended TM Ndanda Primary School and is currently at Hillcrest Secondary School.
"For many years of my life I did not hold leadership positions but always served like a leader because each time I served I had an end goal; it has never been about a position to me. I have always been a voice and influencer for change. Nothing gives me more pleasure than serving my community," he told Mossel Bay Advertiser.
Ayabonga would like to become a medical doctor. "That seems perfect for me. I would like to give hope and provide solutions to people. I always say I do not want to become a politician but be a young leader that sets out to make a difference and be a problem solver."
He believes people should embrace and celebrate the differences between one another and learn more from one another's backgrounds.
He does not have a hero. Anyone who can rise above their circumstances is his hero. "Resilience is my hero."
