MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Friemersheim man Kobus Frederick (52) is set to spend the next eight years behind bars for the 2022 assault and kidnapping of his former girlfriend.
The Mossel Bay Regional Court found Frederick guilty on 10 February and sentenced him to eight years' direct imprisonment the following day.
According to the court documents, the victim had been walking in Friemersheim near Great Brak River on 28 June 2022 when she encountered Frederick.
He told her to come home with him, and when she refused, he began beating her with a stick on her leg, body and face.
She relented under the threat of being beaten further. Frederick took her to his house, gave her some pain medication and locked her in his room.
The following morning, the woman's son, who had managed to track her down to Frederick's house, rescued her. She was taken to a nearby hospital for her injuries.
Frederick was arrested shortly afterwards, and the case was handed to the Mossel Bay Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit's Warrant Officer Tata Marks to investigate. The state prosecutor on the case was Craig Merrington, and together, they secured the eight-year sentence.
