WOMEN'S MONTH NEWS - Robynne Petersen is a young woman making strides in her community as an attorney in Mossel Bay. Petersen, who grew up in Mossel Bay, is an admitted advocate of the High Court of South Africa and has been practising law since 2023.
Her primary area of practice is in general law, both civil and criminal, with a strong focus on family law. Petersen’s dedication lies with matters involving domestic violence and harassment.
“I am deeply passionate about the rights of women and children, and it was this passion for people and justice that drew me to pursue a career in law,” she told Mossel Bay Advertiser.
South Africa has a staggeringly high rate of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). According to Stats SA’s release of the fourth quarter’s crime statistics in May, sexual offences - specifically rape - increased by 19% in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Although the figures decreased in the other seven provinces, GBVF remains prevalent across South Africa, predominantly affecting women and girls.
Dealing with such cases is undoubtedly tough, for victims and for Petersen as well.
To keep her grounded, she tries to stay true to herself, especially when it comes to the immense criticism and societal pressure that women often face.
“What grounds me is staying true to who I am - my beliefs, my roots, and the principles I stand for. Being authentically myself has helped me navigate both personal and professional challenges.”
For the other women in Mossel Bay, Petersen has this to say: “Something powerful happens when a group of women come together under a common banner - whether it’s our beliefs, our religion, or our cause. When women unite and stand as one, we are unstoppable.”
