MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The National Championships for Disabled Bowlers, which took place over seven days right here in the Mossel Bay area, came to a close yesterday afternoon, 18 April with a prizegiving at the Hartenbos Bowling Club.
Tournament convenor, Owen Calverley, said while the Eden district was proud to host this inspiring tournament, it was also justly proud of their own Eden athletes who achieved two silver medals and three gold medals.
Mossel Bay Advertiser previously reported that the tournament, which took place under the theme, ‘Bowls Without Barriers’, opened last Saturday, with a ceremony at the Hartenbos Bowling Club.
Calverley told the Advertiser that Great Brak River, Vistas (Little Brak River) Hartenbos and Mossel Bay Bowling Clubs all played host during the tournament with over 100 competitors and 40 assistants gathering in the town for seven days of gruelling lawn bowls matches.
He said competitors included blind, partially sighted, and people with other physical disabilities from across the country, competing in singles and pairs matches across 16 categories.
The prizegiving saw over 100 medals and several trophies awarded to competitors.
