WESTERN CAPE NEWS - The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is experiencing a critical blood shortage in the O blood group and B+ blood group and it is appealing to all eligible donors to donate blood.
"We always aim to have a blood supply of five days. Currently there is a critical shortage in the O blood groups as well as the B+ blood group," said Marike Gevers, public relations manager at WCBS, in a media release last week.
Gevers said blood stocks tend to decline during winter months as people suffer from colds and flu and consequently cannot donate blood.
"We would like to encourage all healthy existing and potential blood donors who meet the basic donor criteria to donate blood this winter. Each donation can save up to three lives."
The blood service has launched its winter sock campaign in which each donor who successfully donates a unit of blood in May, June, July and August will receive a pair of socks.
"Each month you will see a different Western Cape inspired sock design, so make sure you get your pair and rock your socks, knowing you made a difference."
Persons between the ages of 16 and 75, weighing at least 50kg, who are in good general health, lead a safe sexual lifestyle and would like to save three lives in just 30 minutes, should be able to donate.
