MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Four Mossel Bay Police Station officers made quick work of finding and arresting a man who had allegedly robbed a woman at knifepoint in Spekboom Street near the Mossel Bay Correctional Centre, Heiderand Extension, on Tuesday, 21 January.
Three men had allegedly stopped a woman just after 14:00 that day and demanded at knifepoint that she give them her cellphone. The terrified woman handed over her phone, then two of the men fled and one stayed behind.
This man allegedly demanded money for her to get her cellphone back. He allegedly had her call her boyfriend, who was working in the Great Brak River area, and put the boyfriend on speaker phone.
He then allegedly told the boyfriend that if he did not deposit an undisclosed amount of money into the woman's account, he would rape and kill the woman.
The boyfriend, concerned for his girlfriend's safety, transferred the amount and then called the Great Brak Police and reported the incident.
Withdraw money
The man then allegedly demanded the woman walk to Shoprite in the KwaNonqaba Mall to withdraw the money that had been deposited. Once he had the money, he fled.
Police from Great Brak had, in the meantime, called the Mossel Bay Police Station to report the incident.
When sergeants Malusi Matiya, Ricardo Gelderbloem and Pieter Coetzer and Constable Xolile Speelman came to work that evening, they received the report and immediately began working on the case.
Through CCTV footage obtained from Mossel Bay's Joint Operations Centre (JOC) and the KwaNonqaba Mall, the officers were able to identify the man who had allegedly demanded the money and walked with the woman to Shoprite.
The four officers worked throughout Tuesday evening and the early hours of Wednesday morning until they eventually traced the man to a house in KwaNonqaba and arrested him at 04:00 on 22 January.
The man was arrested and charged with common robbery. The other two suspects are still being sought by the Mossel Bay Police.
