MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Bongi Mthembu, who has been critical, but stable in hospital after being rescued from the sea at Hartenbos on Saturday, is now fully awake and able to talk and interact with his family.
This is according to a notice on the Facebook page of Schweizer-Reneke High School, where Bongi is a learner.
Bongi (17) is able to remember parts of the tournament in which his school is competing in Mossel Bay - AJ Sport Week - and also parts of the near-drowning incident, the Facebook notice stated.
The post started with the words: "Today, you just gotta look up and say... 'I know that was You, God.'"
Bongi had lost his pulse and it had to be restored using CPR and other treatment at the seaside on Saturday, before he was taken by ambulance to Life Bay View Hospital in Mossel Bay.
Bongi's condition improved notably yesterday and he was taken off the ventilator. Late yesterday afternoon, he was sedated and then transferred to George Provincial Hospital.
The Facebook post this afternoon noted that Bongi still had a road to full recovery ahead and asked for people to continue to pray for him.
In the Facebook notice the school thanked those who assisted in Bongi's rescue and medical care.
The school thanked Point High School in Mossel Bay for its support and also thanked "everyone who let us experience again the power of prayer". Point High hosts the AJ Sport Week every year.
