MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The bodies of two teenagers, aged 14 and 18, were retrieved from the water at De Bakke Beach in Mossel Bay yesterday afternoon, 25 April and this morning, 26 April.
According to Warrant Officer Chris Spies, a spokesperson for the Southern Cape Police, preliminary reports suggest that a group went swimming at De Bakke when the two were swept by the waves, away from nearby rocks.
A bystander on the beach who witnessed the incident entered the water with a body board to assist the two victims.
While in the water, he located the body of the 18-year-old, a girl. The body was retrieved from the water with assistance from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Mossel Bay and the Mossel Bay Police.
Police divers and the NSRI proceeded with a search-and-rescue operation until last night in search of the second victim, a boy (14).
They returned to the scene this morning and spotted his body in the water. The body was retrieved from the water at 07:00.
According to Spies, both of the deceased are believed to be from Mossel Bay. At this stage, their identities are not yet known.
The Mossel Bay Police has opened two inquest dockets following the incident.
