NSRI Mossel Bay station commander André Fraser said: "At 11:55 the NSRI Mossel Bay duty crew reacted to a request for assistance from a man reporting that his friend had fallen on rocks and was injured after a wave swept over the man while he was angling at Fransmanshoek, close to Mossel Bay.
"We despatched our sea rescue vehicle and a number of the NSRI crew's personal vehicles with NSRI medics and the Western Cape Government Health EMS responded.
"On arrival at the scene we treated the man for a severe head injury."
Apparently, the angler's friend had managed to pull him to safety on the rocks and the injured man's wife was in attendance.
Fraser said: "Because of the barely accessible location the EMS/AMS Skymed helicopter was activated and the patient was airlifted, secured into a Stokes basket stretcher, to the roadway and loaded into an EMS ambulance, where paramedics continued with medical treatment before he was airlifted to hospital in a serious but stable condition by the EMS/AMS Skymed helicopter."
Life Bay View hospital spokesperson Elzaan Moelich confirmed the man was admitted to hospital and was in a stable condition.
