MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (Smart) responded to a call-out about another dead bottlenose dolphin this week - the second in four days, this time in Dana Bay.
Smart said in a Facebook post the report of an adult bottlenose had come in on Tuesday 16 June, and its volunteers went out to collect biological data and take measurements.
Due to the incoming tide, the volunteers needed assistance to move the dolphin higher up on the beach. Local anglers Brendall Prins and Devon Hermanus stepped in to help.
A Smart committee member, Val Marsh, said they would not have been able to move the dolphin without their help, and thanked them for it.
The dolphin measured just over 2m and had sustained serious bite injuries to the head and the area just in front of the tail flukes.
A special highlight for the team that day was meeting three young cousins who had been very excited to see them in action. Smart had visited their school last year as part of its marine conservation education programme, and the youngsters recognised them.
“Smart thanks all members of the public who report stranded marine animals. Your assistance plays an important role in marine conservation and research,” the team said.
To report marine animals in distress or carcasses ashore, call Smart on 072 227 4715.
