GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - While a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds has been issued for parts of the Northern Cape and north-western Western Cape, the Garden Route is set to experience relatively mild and settled conditions on Father’s Day.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warning highlights the risk of strong interior winds that could affect high-sided vehicles, cause localised damage to informal settlements, and impact agricultural production.
These conditions are expected mainly over the western districts of the Northern Cape and areas such as Cederberg and Matzikama in the Western Cape.
Garden Route outlook
The southern and south-eastern stretches of the Western Cape, including George, Knysna, Mossel Bay, Plettenberg Bay and Wilderness, fall outside the main warning area. Forecasters predict:
- Cloudy to partly cloudy skies with cool to warm temperatures.
- Isolated showers possible, especially in northern and north-eastern districts, with a chance of spreading later in the day.
- Light to moderate coastal winds, mainly northerly to north-easterly, becoming south-westerly at times.
- Daytime highs between 20°C and 23°C.
Overcast conditions are likely across the Garden Route National Park region, favouring indoor or sheltered activities over exposed outdoor pursuits.
Impact on residents and visitors
Family brunches, lunches and coastal drives should proceed with minimal disruption, although light rain gear is recommended.
The N2 and other major routes are not expected to be affected by the strong interior winds, but motorists should remain alert to possible wet patches.
Tourism operators report that most attractions, including forest walks, boat trips and beaches, will operate normally, albeit with reduced visibility due to cloud cover. Farmers and smallholders are advised to secure loose items, though the risk level remains significantly lower than in the interior.
SAWS has urged the public to monitor updates, particularly those travelling inland or northwards, as winter weather patterns can shift rapidly.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to make the most of a relatively gentle winter day on the Garden Route and enjoy a safe Father’s Day with family and friends.
