LIFESTYLE NEWS - Towels can be a hefty home investment and you want to keep them looking as good as possible for as long as possible. Here’s what you need to know to keep your towels in tip-top condition…
Wash before use
Towels are notorious colour-leakers.
There’s also the possibility of trace chemicals and dyes from manufacturing being left in them.
Wash towels before use – to soften them up and remove any residue. This boosts their absorbency.
Use half the usual detergent, and add a half cup of vinegar to the wash to help set colours. This is best done for the first few washes.
Be sure to wash with similar colours in case of ‘bleeding’.
Reduce or eliminate softener
Softeners build up over time, and can damage the towel as well as reduce absorbency.
Try to limit using softeners to every three to four washes, or wean yourself from the habit entirely and use a cup of vinegar each wash instead.
Shake it off
When your towels come out of the dryer, shake them to help raise the ‘pile’.
Never iron your towels, and make sure they’re always properly dry if you’re going to store them to avoid mold.
Soft, fluffy towels will always be yours if you follow these simple steps.
