GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Engela and Elza from Cancercare invited cancer survivors throughout the Garden Route to attend an art exhibition and survivor event on Saturday, 9 June. The survivors were asked to share their stories through different forms of art and creativity (paintings, pottery, photography, writing and other expressive art forms).
These were beautifully exhibited at the “Creating Hope, Leaving Footprints” event, hosted at George South Primary School. Wayne McAfee, director of the Sport Academy in George, delivered a message about hope and leaving footprints.
As part of the programme, Cancercare also presented various interesting art and creativity workshops: Mosaic, Make a Pot - an introduction to pottery, Textile Art, Gesso, Acrylic Pouring and Tjhoko paint, presented by well-known artists.
Besides the welcoming fruit juice, tasty snacks and open coffee bar, guests were surprised by an amazing goody bag with an abundance of gifts. Included in the homemade bag were, among others, a poetry book, water bottle, plant and colourful pens, contributed by cancer survivors and sponsors. Most special however, was a precious teddy bear, better known as a Carebear.
Behind the Carebears project is an Australian woman – Joy Davies – diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Joy needed some distraction from the chemotherapy and started a group in which people could make something small to give to others in similar situations. This initiative not only offered Joy much needed distraction, but women all over the world joined her project. These women made it their mission to pay it forward, one teddy bear at a time. Since July 2016, almost 28 000 bears have been made.
The Carebear motto is: “Stitched with Love and Blessed with Prayers. For a Special Person, from someone who Cares.”
Locally, retired teacher and school principle Rene Sieberhagen reached out to Cancercare Outeniqua Oncology, wanting to show her support and love to a close friend living with cancer, as well as others affected by cancer. Rene’s unselfish offer resulted in 200 handmade Cancercare Carebears, distributed to cancer patients and caregivers during the 2018 “Creating Hope, Leaving Footprints” event.
You can also play your part and support this worthwhile project by delivering any leftover material to Cancercare Outeniqua, which will pass it on to Rene, supporting her and the Carebear project.
