MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A Mossel Bay resident would like to start a youth wind band in town.
Private music teacher Catherine Corkill, who has 18 years' teaching experience, said it had long been her dream to do this.
"I've been waiting on the Lord. I order music from overseas. It's the only way you can get band music. Then one day a few weeks ago, randomly, the music arrived. I knew this was my starting point."
Catherine said she planned to hold auditions for those wanting to join the band. They must be at Grade 3 music playing level or upwards.
Applicants should be able to read music, preferably.
Catherine is looking for players of woodwind instruments, such as the flute, clarinet, bassoon, oboe and saxophone; brass musicians who play one of the following: trumpet, tuber, euphonium, french horn or tenor horn; and those proficient with percussion instruments, such as the drums and bongo drums.
She said a base guitarist would also be welcome.
"My passion is young people, bringing them together, making music together and sharing music with other people. There are so many things tugging at young people's attention nowadays, that it is good to give them something to do which is positive, meaningful and uplifting."
On Thursday, 6 May, Catherine and two students will be playing light music at the Prince Vintcent building in Bland Street, Mossel Bay, from 18:30 until 20:00.
There will be other social events with a variety of refreshments in the Prince Vintcent building to enjoy at the same time.
Call Catherine (076 382 2371) if you would like to audition to be in the wind band.
