MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality, in collaboration with the Department of Social Development, Child Welfare, the Department of Education, the South African Police Services (SAPS), Heart-to-Heart and the Community Development Workers hosted an awareness programme to commemorate Child Protection Week.
The focus of the programme was "choices" and the target group was Grade 6 learners. During the engagement with the children, videos were shown that displayed choices made by youth.
Other challenges that were tackled in the videos were role models, peer pressure, cyberbullying and bullying at school. The objectives were to decrease the youth's involvement in violence, sexual activities and all types of abuse within the school environment and to shape future leaders.
The principal of Erica Primary School, Mr Van Graan reported that the videos played were insightful and the learners could relate to the messages. The programme reached a total of 815 learners from the 15 primary schools in the greater Mossel Bay Area.
Learners were educated about their rights and encouraged to resist peer pressure.
