The Haven Night Shelter in Mossel Bay requires provisions.
Currently it has 75 residents and there is still place for two women. The men's section is full.
Besides these 75 residents, The Haven also gives food to 25 people who gather outside The Haven each day to get food.
The Haven manager Piet Maree says: "They are hungry. We must feed them too. Every day the police try to get them off the streets, but they go back to the streets and they arrive every day here for food.
"We also assist two backpackers' establishments by providing them with food." During the lockdown, these two packpackers' establishments in town took in homeless people
Maree says there is a good relationship between The Haven and the backpackers' establishments. "When we have spare food, we give it to them and when they have spare, they give it to us. We are all in contact with one another."
Maree explains that during the lockdown, the Department of Social Development provides food to The Haven.
Maree says the distribution of food is like the fish and bread in the Bible, which fed thousands.
"When we think we are rock bottom, then the Lord provides."
For those who would like to make donations, The Haven still requires the following:
Protein, pasta, rice, mielie meal, potatoes, vegetables, soap, personal hygiene items, washing powder, toilet paper, soup ingredients, canned foods.
People may not drop off donations during the lockdown, but The Haven is allowed to collect food using their vehicle.
Call Maree (064 433 1388 or 044 691 0189) if you are able to help.
