MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipal Manager, Adv Thys Giliomee confirmed that the heavy smoke evident over Mossel Bay this morning stems mostly from fires outside the municipal boundaries of the greater Mossel Bay.
"At his time the only active fire within the Mossel Bay municipal area is at an unreachable, very high part of the Jonkersberg," he said.
"However, on the George-side of the Jonkersberg homes are endangered and the Mossel Bay Fire and Disaster Management Services crew is on the scene to assist the other firefighting authorities.
"Unfortunately the prevailing winds are causing much of the smoke from this fire to move over the greater Mossel Bay."
Early this morning Kobus Crous of Mossel Bay Helicopters managed to extinguish a fire in an inaccessible kloof in the Gondwana area. He is currently attending to the fire in the Riversdale area.
