MOSSEL BAY NEWS - There was certainly hope in Hope Street, Extension 8, on Mandela Day this week, when knitted scarves were handed out to members of the community.
The colourful scarves were arrayed along the fence in Hope Street, behind the Volkskerk van Afrika.
Delighted members of the public rushed up to the fence, where members of the Eden KnitWits knitting and crochet group handed out the scarves.
The local initiative at the Volkskerk, opposite Ridgeview Primary School, was part of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day "Secret Scarves Shhh" mission.
There are organised groups of KnitWits all over South Africa, who knit and crochet items for people in need.

The 67 Blankets ambassador for the Garden Route area, Jennifer Joubert, who is also part of the Eden KnitWits, said about 250 scarves were handed out at the Volkskerk.
Needlewomen from all over the Garden Route made scarves and there were donations from as far as Potchefstroom, Joubert says.
The annual event, explained 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day founder Carolyn Steyn, was for a rainbow of colourful scarves to be draped on trees, poles and fences in various public places across the country on and around Mandela Day for any passerby to take for free, to use and enjoy.
The scarves each had a note attached that read: "I am not lost. If you are cold and need me, please take me. "Love, 67 Blankets xxx."
