MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Not only are the Da Gamaskop police investigating a case of housebreaking and theft in Seemeeupark, after which a flat screen television and three firearms were reported stolen, but an additional charge of negligent loss of a firearm has been laid.
According to information received from the police, the complainant, an elderly man, reported the housebreaking on Saturday, 28 October.
It is suspected the crime took place between 22:00 on Friday, 27 October after the complainant went to bed and 06:00 the following day when he noticed signs of the break-in.
The safe, in which the firearms were reportedly kept was, according to the complainant, being treated for rust and was therefore not in its fixed place, according to prescribed regulations.
Criminals allegedly noticed the safe through the open blinds of a window and gained access to the property through the same window. It is uncertain how they obtained the key to the safe to remove a 9mm handgun, a shotgun and a .22 rifle.
"We issue a stern warning to the owners of firearms to take heed of all the measures required by law to safeguard their firearms. Anyone who has any questions regarding the exact requirements, can contact the designated officer, Sgt Evelyn Pienaar, at the Da Gamaskop police station on 044 606 2222," says the spokesperson at the station, Capt Wollie Fourie.
Anyone with information regarding the housebreaking or stolen items can contact the investigating officer, Const Nelly Manyontha (044 606 2200).
