MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Parents dropping their children at Milkwood Primary School in Mossel Bay will breathe a sigh of relief following the latest change concerning traffic flow on Marsh Street.
Traffic congestion at the school has become problematic since the Department of Education increased the learner capacity.
The high traffic volumes in the area create a safety risk for the children that need to cross the street and a hassle for parents and caregivers who drop off and fetch the children.
At the Mossel Bay municipal council meeting on 29 July, council granted approval for the implementation of one-way traffic flow during certain hours of the day from the intersection of Beach Road and Marsh Street to Bland Street via Point road and Bland Street East to accommodate the high traffic volumes in the vicinity of Milkwood Primary School.
Peak periods
The arrangement will be effective during the morning and afternoon peak periods between 06:30 and 07:30 and 13:00 and 15:00 on weekdays.
This decision will be tested in a public participation process and all affected property owners will be informed of the decision.
Milkwood Primary School will be responsible for all costs related to the application and implementation of the decision.
The school will also be required to serve a notice to the property owners in the vicinity of its intention to implement one-way traffic flow along the proposed road and comments received in this regard must be presented to the municipality.
Should the traffic models change, the traffic flow matter at Milkwood Primary School will be reviewed in line with any investigation that the municipality may undertake in the future.
