MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Shocked members of the community again tonight met at the Barcelona Circle in KwaNonqaba to commemorate the life of 26-yeard-old Naledi Phangindawo who was brutally murdered on Saturday, 6 June.
A 34-year-old suspect will appear in court in Mossel Bay on Wednesday, 10 June in connection with her death.
The suspect handed himself over to the Lwandle Police in Cape Town on Sunday, 7 June. Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie earlier today confirmed that the suspect was being transferred to Mossel Bay to appear in court.
According to information, Phangindawo was at a cultural event at a residence in Adriaans Avenue, KwaNonqaba when she was killed on Saturday night. The suspect, allegedly an intimate partner waited for her outside the residence and attacked her without warning when she was called outside to speak to him. Phangindawo sustained multiple wounds to her body, face and limbs after the suspect attacked her with a knife and an axe.
“An eyewitness tried to intervene, whilst another ran to find help, but the suspect managed to escape after the attack. When police arrived at the scene, the victim was already taken to hospital where she was declared dead on arrival,” Captain Pojie confirmed.
Shocked community members, among them school friends from Point High School dubbed the incident #justicefornaledi.
On Sunday afternoon, community members, wearing black met to mourn Phangindawo and to make a statement against gender based. A former class mate of Phangindawo in a message to the Mossel Bay Advertiser wrote: “ As a woman, I want to make sure that everyone knows her life was taken as a result of gender based violence. Please make sure that her story is heard.” Phangindawo’s death caused an outcry on social media. Another male acquaintance in his tribute to Phangindawo wrote on social media: “Hard Days to be a Man (sic) #justicefornaledi.”
Phangindawo, former Miss KwaNonqaba was according to information working as Herbalife representative at the time of her death. She leaves behind two small children.
