MOSSEL BAY NEWS - This past Saturday, Mayor Dirk Kotzé along with Councillors Leon van Dyk and Mark Furness, as well as Director of Community Services, Elize Nel, planted young trees in Heiderand. The trees were sponsored by AfriForum.
The tree planting took place in Apiesdoringstraat in Heiderand.
AfriForum, who sponsored the trees, believes, “Everyone has the right to a healthy environment that promotes good health.”
Therefore tree planting is in line with their efforts to promote environmental health and sustainability within the framework of environmental and water legislation.
AfriForum has often acted as a watchdog to identify violations and hold the relevant regulator responsible for efficient water and environmental management, where necessary and in the case of Saturday’s tree planting, this is often done in collaboration with local municipalities.
The collaboration takes the form of help with maintaining water infrastructure, cleaning landfills and repairing sewage infrastructure. It is in the branch's interest to create a sustainable future for its descendants by driving local environmental actions.
Saturday’s tree planting was part of the council's and municipality's strategy to green Mossel Bay.
The Grow Strategy, Mayor Dirk Kotzé explains, “includes a focus on growing environmental sustainability, growing independence from depleting resources and increasing healthy and sustainable living through growing more food gardens and reducing waste.”
According to Director of Community Services Elize Nel, “In the past 14 months, 3 001 trees have been planted in Mossel Bay. Saturday’s tree planting was once again a good example of the importance of joining hands with community organisations like AfriForum,”
Mayor Kotzé said, “Through collaboration, we achieve more!
Quoting Psalm 1:3, he said , in the scripture we read, “He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.”
Kotzé concluded that he hopes that the community of Mossel Bay will remain firmly planted but yield fruit in the proper season.
Kotzé, who himself is an entrepreneur quoted businessman Warren Buffett who said, "Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago."
