MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Hartenbos' Vernon Barnard has produced a tune called Close the skies, for Ukraine.
It is based on Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky's appeal for the airspace above Ukraine to be closed to Russia.
Barnard's song includes the haunting sounds of explosions and blasts, such as those heard in a war zone.
The short tune is professionally produced in Barnard's studio. It is powerful and full of impact, yet poignant and sad, with the sense of Zelensky pleading for help. To listen to the song, click here.
Barnard is a singer, songwriter and producer. He has written numerous songs, including music for well-known entertainers. He recently wrote a theme song for a Garden Route TV programme, In Lewende Lywe, which showcases 60 music artists.
The programme was produced by Barend Fourie of Gatskuur Television Productions.
Barnard said: "I have been watching the war on TV from day one. In the beginning, one just thought it was a threat and never expected it to actually happen.
It's so unnecessary that something like this should happen in the 21st Century: one country standing up against Russia. It's terrible to see this during the supposed peaceful period after the Second World War."
Barnard comes from a family of singers and musicians. His brother Leon is a guitar tutor.
The four Barnard brothers and a friend, Dean Bouwer, made up the nationally successful band, The Silence, in the 70s.
Vernon is married to the sister, Joan, of legendary South African singer, Lesley Rae Dowling. Vernon Jr, his nephew, came fourth in The Voice South Africa in 2016.
