MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The learners at Leolan Academy had a unique experience this week when they went on an educational visit to the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court.
Despite being in an environment where there is not always reason to smile, the learners had a lot of fun as they were showed around court.
Court procedure was explained and even demonstrated during a mock hearing in which the learners keenly participated.
From wearing the robe to being handcuffed, getting an insider's glimpse of the cells to standing in the witness box, the learners were seemingly keen to immerse themselves in the role play.
The learners had to rise when the magistrate entered and exited court, as during normal court procedure.
State prosecutor Craig Merrington simulated the court proceedings, as two "suspects" were tried for a "crime". Sentence was handed down by Magistrate Clifton Maseti. The "suspects" were sentenced to three years' imprisonment for "stealing chocolate".

One of the learners' parents facilitated the visit. She said, upon enquiry, she got the idea to show them the practical workings of court based on games they play, mimicking television series or movies they watched.
"I must commend the officials, especially Magistrate Maseti and state prosecutor Merrington for being so accommodating towards our learners," says Yolandi Botha, owner of Leolan Academy.
A confident "witness".
