REEBOK NEWS - A resident from Reebok sent a photograph of goose barnacles to Mossel Bay Advertiser. The Advertiser posted the picture on social media and there were hundreds of responses.
People said they had seen gooseneck barnacles on beaches in the Mossel Bay area.
According to Wikipedia, gooseneck barnacles have a long, fleshy stalk which attaches to objects. They are filter-feeding crustaceans, normally seen in dense colonies on ships or on floating driftwood.
The name, gooseneck barnacle, comes from medieval times.
It was thought the barnacle was the larval stage of the barnacle goose (a species of bird), because no one had ever seen a barnacle goose nesting or an egg being laid.
This was before it was known that birds migrate. (Barnacle geese nest in the Arctic.) The heart-shaped shell of gooseneck barnacles is believed to resemble the head of the barnacle goose. In Spain and Portugal, they're considered a delicacy because of their sweet-tasting flesh, a cross between lobster and clam.
Photographs sent to the newspaper. It is not known who took them.
