MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The fishermen's children's event on Saturday, 9 July, in Mossel bay was a huge success, according to organiser Renay Robertson.
She said sponsors' help and assistance in the kitchen were among the reasons for the success of the event.
The speakers gave good presentations and the dancers moved many in the audience, Renay says.
"The children were so excited about the gifts they received and to hear about the amazing work their fathers are doing to feed them. It's a hard life at sea and the time spent with the family should be well spent."
Renay said families were affected by the absence of a father.
She said all parties involved join hands with her in building and cementing her project in honour of deceased seafarer, Deon Olkers.
'Humbled'
Counsellor to fishermen Lucy Arens, from Viking Cape Town, who attended, said: "I am humbled to have spoken about Deon, whom I worked with when I came to Mossel Bay. I called him the mayor, because he knew so many people and listened and helped as best possible with their social issues. While he was a humorous person, he had a steely side, which was authority with love.
"I salute Deon and all seafarers. They go out to the deep sea to fish and by doing so they feed the nation."
Mervyn Barnard, general secretary of the Trawler and Line Fishermen's Union, said: "The event should be held every year. This token of appreciation is most welcome. Most of the time our fisherman are at sea and miss out on birthdays, festive holidays and special occasions. These vents we embrace in the fishing industry.
"I urge fishing businesses to join the project management to make the next family gathering and gifts for the children a success."
Renay thanks the municipality of Mossel Bay and everyone who made this event possible and "a huge success". Contact her (064 167 8778 or renayjren@gmail.com) for more information about the next planned project for the Fishermen's Gift Box.
