MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A full investigation has been launched by SeaVuna Fishing following an incident in which a 22-year-old employee's foot was caught in the conveyor system on Thursday, 7 February.
The spokesperson for SeaVuna Fishing, Mariska Richards, says Phumzile Nonzaba sustained a serious injury when his left foot became trapped at the company's Mossel Bay Ice Plant.
"The system was immediately shut down and all standard emergency procedures were followed."
Emergency response personnel who arrived on the scene shortly after the incident were able to free Nonzaba from the conveyor system, whereafter he was immediately rushed to Life Bay View Private Hospital.
His left foot had to be amputated.
Hospital spokesperson Elzaan Moelich confirms Nonzaba is in a stable and satisfactory condition.
Richards says SeaVuna Fishing "regrets this unfortunate incident and has initiated a full investigation to determine what caused it, especially as the company's health and safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) are aimed at preventing injury and loss of life.
"SeaVuna Fishing's management eagerly awaits the findings of the investigation and will carefully consider whether any remedial action is needed to prevent a similar incident from occurring in future and to ensure that employees can continue to enjoy a safe working environment," she says.
Nonzaba had only been working at the company since November 2018.
