MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A Mossel Bay woman who was attacked in the street and whose lip was badly injured in the attack, has had surgery, so she is able to eat and drink properly.
This is a relief to her, but she is frustrated that her court case is taking a long time.
Previous to the surgery the food or liquid would spill out of Somikazi (Somi) Velelo's mouth and she felt she could not eat or drink in people's company.
Somi, a KwaNonqaba resident, had surgery on 31 July this year. She went to a medical practitioner in George, who referred her to the Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital. Because Somi could not afford to pay for surgery by a private practitioner, it was done at the hospital.
Somi told the Mossel Bay Advertiser: "I cannot say I am 100 percent happy with my mouth now. You can still see the scar, but at least nothing comes out of my mouth when I eat and drink."
Somi was attacked on the morning of Tuesday, 24 October 2017. She explained: "I lend money to people who stay near me. I get interest and I use the money to pay my college fees. I lent money to a woman's boyfriend. Then, when I phoned the boyfriend, she got jealous and said I was having an affair with the man because they didn't want to pay me back.
"If I have money, one day I might have further, proper reconstructive surgery."
Somi complained: "My court case is taking too long. It's been ongoing from 2017 until now and I live in fear of this lady who walks up and down the street. She still has the same attitude towards me."
