MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Reports of a possible oil spill were received by the Mossel Bay Municipality earlier this week. A site visit was conducted at the Blinde River near Dana Bay.
The municipality confirmed that there were signs of pollution at the mouth of the river. The estuary receives storm water from several areas, so further inspections were done upstream.
Following closer inspection, it was further confirmed that the substance noticed was not coming into the estuary via storm water from nearby residential areas, nor from surrounding farms, nor from Eskom.
Mossel Bay Municipality proceeded to alert, among others, the Garden Route District Municipality, the relevant departments at the Western Cape Provincial Government as well as CapeNature, the Breede-Gouritz Catchment Management Agency and PetroSA.
The Mossel Bay Advertiser requested comment from PetroSA regarding the incident. A spokesperson said: "After receiving information about an oil spill at the mouth of the Blinde River in Dana Bay, PetroSA immediately despatched a team to investigate.
"At this stage there is no indication that the oil originates from PetroSA operations, nor that it is related to its products. However, a sample of the oil from the area where the spill occurred has been taken to compare it with that of PetroSA to determine the source."
