HARTENBOS NEWS - Hundreds of locals and visitors took part in the third Anti-Bullying Colour Fun Run on Human Rights Day at Hartenbos Seefront.
Participants of all shapes and sizes as well as four legged kids joined in the fun. Lovely weather greeted the participants and coloured hair and outfits added to the party element.
Everyone who completed the course along the walkway and beach received a beautiful customised medal.
Several sponsors also came to the party, either at paint throwing points or contributing prizes for the lucky draws. A band of ladies took up the pan and produced decadent pancakes and coffee.
Although the day was all about fun and prizes the Anti-Bullying Academy is about very serious matters. This non-profit organisation wants to make the world a better place for those who fall victim to bullying. According to the founder members Karen Gray and Deon Lessing people do not always realise the different forms of bullying and they are scared to speak up. There are various forms of bullying and many of us have been affected by it through the course of our lives.
"Now is your chance to take a stand by supporting this life changing venture and by taking part in the fun run you have already made a contribution," Karen says.
She pointed out the different types of bullying being:
- Verbal bullying - includes name-calling, threats of harm, and taunting.
- Social bullying - can involve excluding someone intentionally, encouraging others to socially exclude someone, spreading rumours, or publicly shaming someone.
- Physical bullying - often results in physically harming someone or their belongings by hitting, punching, pushing, spitting, kicking, or tripping.
- Cyberbullying - involves using electronic media such as on the Internet, texting, and social media to spread hurtful and damaging stories, rumours, and images. Although cyberbullying can take place anywhere and any time, this form of bullying often can travel rapidly through a school population and beyond, devastating the victims and leaving them feeling powerless.
