MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The mother of a seven-year-old girl from KwaNonqaba will go to the police for a second time following an ordeal with a man who threatened her daughter with rape.
The woman told the Mossel Bay Advertiser that on 11 January she was inside her home in KwaNonqaba, getting ready for work while her daughter was playing outside.
"When I walked out of my house, my daughter came running towards me, in tears.
"My child told me that a man picked her up and carried her all the way to Mayixhale Street.
"She said the man took her to an old house near where the library used to be and threatened her with a knife.
"She said the man told her he was going to rape her. My child told the man that she needed to 'pee', after which she managed to run past his legs and escaped."
According to the woman, they went to the KwaNonqaba Police Station to report the matter.
"A police officer told us that we could not open a case because my daughter wasn't raped and that there was no evidence."
The Mossel Bay Advertiser confirmed with the Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, that the woman could in fact lay a charge.
"The police are there to deliver a service to the community.
"If a resident wants to lay a complaint about police not being willing to investigate a matter, they can speak directly to the police station commander or they can report the matter to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
A police officer told the Mossel Bay Advertiser the fact that the man threatened the girl with rape, was already something to be investigated.
The mother of the child says her child identified the man after the incident.
"Members of the community bought him here and my child said he was the man who carried her away.
"He ran away before we could phone the police. We don't know his name but we know what he looks like and where he lives."
