MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The 2018 Dias & Port Festival is going to rock!
The public is warmly invited to an evening in which the senses will be ignited and the classics celebrated.
Performing at this very special concert will be the Odeion String Quartet, together with renowned local musician Olive Sandilands. Only two performances are scheduled - and entry is free of charge.
The Odeion String Quartet was established in 1991 at the University of the Free State and is the only resident string quartet at a South African university.
The quartet has performed throughout the country and abroad to wide critical acclaim. Among a host of prizes, it walked away with the KKNK's Kanna award for Best Classical Production in 2014. This was also the year it released a CD entitled Bits and Pieces. The quartet was invited to take part in the Birmingham Chamber Music Festival in June 2015 and was nominated for a kykNet Fiësta award for Best Achievement in Classical Music.
Members of the quartet play an important role as teachers at the Odeion School of Music which attracts students from all over the country.
In addition, the members lead sections of the Free State Symphony Orchestra, coach the string sections of the Free State Youth Orchestra, train chamber music ensembles and assist with the Mangaung Strings Project.
Olive Sandilands needs no introduction - suffice to say that her exceptional talent, combined with those of the Odeion String Quartet, is a delightful way in which to get seriously hooked on classics.
These concerts will take place today, Friday 2 and tomorrow, Saturday 3 February at the Dias Museum.
Doors open at 18:30, with the concerts starting at 19:30. To ensure a seat, bookings are recommended and can be made with Abé Meintjes (083 268 3718), or Annette Strydom (076 857 2900).
The Mossel Bay Arts Society, a non-profit organisation which strives to sustain the arts, hosts monthly concerts in which local and international musicians are featured.
During August, the society dedicates itself to the local Eisteddfod - thereby encouraging a love for the arts among the youth. Membership of the society amounts to R100 per person for the year, which entitles members to discounted concert tickets and advance alerts of coming events.
Further information is available from the chairman, Abé Meintjes (083 268 3718).
