MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The local Marlin Lifesaving Club came fourth overall in the Cape Champs annual sport lifesaving competition held at Santos Beach, Mossel Bay.
Excellent result
This is an excellent result because most of the other eight clubs which competed are larger than Marlin.
Marlin is based at Santos Beach. Cape Town clubs, Milnerton, Fish Hoek and Llandudno took the first three places respectively in the championships.
The other clubs which competed in the champs on Saturday, 3 February, were Plettenberg Bay, which came fifth; Clifton Beach (sixth) from Cape Town; Southern Cross (seventh), based at De Bakke Beach, Mossel Bay; Mossel Bay Surf Lifesaving Club (eighth), based at Dias Beach; and Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club (in ninth place) from Gqeberha.
Lifesavers from Mossel Bay showed they could compete with the best.
Third overall
Rudi Boer from Marlin came third overall in the senior age group and he won the senior flags race.
Quewin Pieterse from Southern Cross came third overall in the junior age group. He also excelled by competing in the senior flags race, while still a junior, and coming second in this race. In the senior women's contest, Fish Hoek lifesavers claimed the top three places.
In the junior women, Plettenberg Bay lifesavers took first and second spot and Clifton took the third spot.
Top three positions
Juniors are U14s to U19s and seniors, 19 years old and older. Mossel Bay lifesavers who attained top three positions in their various events were Rudi Boer, Cole Josephs, Nadeem Fillies, Waleed Beyers, Kyle Dickson, Zane Briesies, Zack Briesies and Cameron Joubert, all from Marlin; and Elam Saku, Jabes October, Quewin Pieterse and Jonah Busch, all from Southern Cross.
