It has been confirmed that Iannone will ride the Factory GSX-RR for Team Suzuki next season, ending a four-year span with Ducati.
Neither Iannone or Ducati have had a particularly good time of it during those four years. Prior to Sunday, Iannone had never won a Moto GP race while Ducati's last success came way back in 2010 in Australia when Casey Stoner raced to glory.
However, the Italian was superb on Sunday as the Moto GP returned to Austria for the first time since 1997.
Iannone began the race from pole and got a great start off the line to lead into Turn One.
He was the only rider to change to the medium rear tyre allocation.
After being passed by Dovizioso, Iannone was able to fight back against his compatriot and eventually crossed the line ahead to take the historic win.
Jorge Lorenzo finished third.
Speaking after the race, Iannone paid tribute to the team and hoped that the victory went some way to thanking everyone for all they have done for his career.
"It’s an incredible feeling," said Iannone.
"It's very, very difficult to explain this emotion, my first Moto GP win with Ducati. I started on this bike in this category and I've worked for four years with this incredible group that supported me 100 percent from the beginning.
"Now, I know I finish my contract at the end of this season, but I think this is a very good present [to them]."
