GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Primary and high school students from schools in the Southern Cape participated in the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League #4 at Knysna Montessori School on Saturday 9 September.
Regional event organiser Juan Botes said, “The fires also destroyed the track, which meant that Montessori had to build and salvage what was left of the track to make this event possible.”
He added that organisers were thrilled by the great pre-entry response, having received 144 rider entries, and a total of 22 schools participated in the race.
The best performing high school was Outeniqua from George and the top performing primary school was Blanco from Blanco.
The Southern Cape #4 winners per category are:
- Subjunior boys B (14 years): Julian Bung, Oakhill High
- Subjunior girls B (14): Sorina Venter, Outeniqua High
- Youth men A (15): Matthew Leppan, Greenwood Bay College
- Youth women A (15): Charlissa Schultz, Langenhoven Gim
- Youth men B (16): Tristan Nortjé, Outeniqua High
- Youth women B (16): Kirstin Roelofse, York High School
- Junior men (17-18): Casper Pretorius, Shalom Akademie
- Junior women (17-18): Amy Tait, York High School
Learners competed at Montessori last weekend to secure a spot for their school team at next month's interschool final in Gauteng.
The Spur league was launched in 2009. The initiative aims to provide a level of regional and national structure for the sport at school level, as well as to encourage schools to adopt mountain biking as an official in-school sport.
The league interschools final wraps up this season on 7 and 8 October at Bekker High School in Magaliesburg, Gauteng. Schools go head-to-head on race day and the race moves away from the individual rider-focus to a team-focused race. Each school strives to qualify for this part of league. –Supplied
