MOSSEL BAY NEWS - This year the Mossel Bay Bowling Club used the opportunity provided by the 2018 Sport Festival to launch and host a new, exciting lawn bowls format.
The sport has undergone a serious transformation in every aspect over the last number of years and with this renewal in mind, the first Pro-10 Trips tournament open to all bowling clubs in the Eden district was held over the weekend of 6 and 7 October.
Besides the unique game format, the highlight of the tournament was the age range of the competitors.
Few sports can expect to have competitive players ranging from 15 to 83 years old competing on an equal footing - proof that lawn bowls is the one sport that can be enjoyed throughout one's life.
Sixteen teams competed in the event, with the round-robin sectional matches being played on Saturday. Each team had to play five rounds of ten ends each, making for a very long and exhausting day.
The four finalists then faced off early on Sunday morning with ominous clouds overhead, but fortunately, the rain stayed away and both the semi-final and final rounds were played without any rain interruptions.
Silver medalists: Pieter Koekemoer, Willie Tredoux and Hardus Mynhardt.
Gold medalists: Wollie Fourie, Zakes Salemane and Tekkie van Rensburg with club president Owen Calverley.
Mossel Bay Bowling Club thanks Mossel Bay SuperSpar for sponsoring the prizes, Mossel Bay Municipality for the medals, as well as Big Daddy and Bounty Wildsvleis Verwerking for their kind sponsorship of food.
With their kind assistance, this event will now become a permanent fixture on the Eden District bowling calendar.
Fourth place: Judy Swart, Philip Hattingh and Mariette Young.
