MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Coreen Fourie Eco-Adventure will be held this year for the 21st time as a tribute to the talented Coreen Fourie who contributed greatly to Mossel Bay in many ways.
She died of cancer in 1999. The event this year is also in honour of Rox le Roux as well as Chris and Annetjie Steyn. Rox was an officer, but also a true gentleman, who spent the last 15 years in Hartenbos. He passed away from cancer after a short illness at age 76. Most of his life was spent in the SA Air Force, where he started out at 16 as an apprentice radio/telecommunications technician. He retired at 55 as a full colonel.
After this, Rox worked for Comair before settling in Hartenbos Hills with his wife, Rose. Rox was blessed with many gifts. He could do electronics, woodwork and everything in between. If Rox could not do it, it could not be done.
Many gifts
He also had a great love for people and was always willing to help out where he could. The Mossel Bay Methodist Church ministers and congregation have many memories of work done by Rox for the church.
Neighbours in Safraan Street also knew they could come to Rox for help, and even the children made use of his expertise when it came to identifying a snake they had caught. Sadly Rox was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer in June 2017 and after six weeks of radiation treatment and three months of chemotherapy he died on 17 April 2018. He was a man of great faith and trusted God is everything he did and this was evident throughout his illness.
Safe in the arms of Jesus he leaves his wife Rose, three sons Steven, Louis, Eugene and Marianne and grandson Rijnardt.
A medal has been created to honour Rox for this year's Coreen Fourie Eco-Adventure.
Also on the medal are the names of Chris and Annetjie Steyn, who were the most loyal supporters of the Coreen event. This year they are doing their twentieth eco-adventure - a great achievement. The event is a walk/jog starting at Bat's Cove at the Point, continuing along the St Blaize Trail to the Coreen monument and returning to make a total distance of about 5km.
Magnificent views
The views are truly magnificent and well worth the effort. The trail is one of the outstanding features of Mossel Bay - well worth showing your Christmas visitors.
There are 19 medals so far. They are large (51mm or 61mm) and quite beautiful. The new medal this year depicts an Eland, the last of a triplet buck series. Some of the earlier medals will also be available, if you prefer them. This year the eco-adventure will be held on Wednesday, 26 December.
Start any time from 06:30 to 08:00 at Bat's Cove at the Point. When you come you can enter and go, so you don't have to wait around. (It's not a race, so you can take your time, chat and enjoy the scenery. The weather forecast predicts "mostly sunny weather with a high of 25C", so a hat is recommended.
Entry is R20/person. All proceeds go to CANSA. Enquiries to Kleintjie van Schalkwyk (072 077 4121).
