Ethiopia were eyeing their first-ever point in the tournament’s history, having lost all three games and failing even to score a goal in South Africa two years ago, but failed as their opponents were simply in a class of their own.
DR Congo started the game on an attacking note and their first chance came as early as the tenth minute when Guy Lusadisu’s shot from a free kick just missed the target with Ethiopia’s goalkeeper Abel Mamo beaten.
It was Lusadisu who broke the deadlock at the half hour mark. The towering striker was the first to meet Nelson Munganga’s cross and his thumping header went inside the net with Mamo having no chance.
Leading 1-0 at the break, another header from Heritier Luvambu gave the Leopards their second goal of the day just seconds into the second half.
