MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Sussex Ladies' cricket team won their match against Themabalethu by 148 runs on Saturday, 27 January, at Sussex's home turf, the D’Almeida cricket field, Mossel Bay.
Sussex Ladies are on top of the Division 2 log, undefeated. They are on a remarkable winning streak and it is even more phenomenal because much of the team are schoolgirls.
Tomorrow, Sunday 4 February, they play against Knysna Cavaliers Cricket Club in the final for the Division 2 trophy and for promotion to Division 1.
In last Saturday's match, Thembalethu opted to bowl first after winning the toss, a decision they would regret, as the Sussex batters came out blazing, scoring 150 runs in the first 15 overs.
The sweltering conditions did not help the fielding side. They had to make hard yards in the field in extremely trying conditions.
Player/coach Elzaan Pietersen paved the way for a massive score and finished on 59 runs from 79 balls. Faith-Lynne Karelse provided vital support, making 26 runs. Sussex finished on 219 runs in their allotted 30 overs.
Good, tight bowling and outstanding fielding kept the scoreboard in check and Thembalethu could not get going, eventually being bowled out for 71 runs.
Sussex all-rounder Tishé Frans had impressive figures of three wickets for 13 runs in six overs. She was supported well by Miqué Karelse, who took two wickets for 19 runs in six overs.
Now, all roads lead to the Recreation Grounds in Oudtshoorn for the final tomorrow. The 30-over game starts at 11:00.
