BUSINESS NEWS - Solar technology has become cheaper and more accessible in South Africa, enabling people to explore their energy options.
Before you totally turn your back on Eskom, however, take heed of the advice of energy expert Chris Yelland, who says it is better for households to choose a grid-tied solar system.
This means they will stay on the Eskom grid, but use a solar system to supplement their energy needs.
Remember, solar energy is generated during daylight hours, while most homes use the bulk of their electricity in the evenings.
This and other factors mean that if you want to move totally off the grid, you will need a generator and/or a solar hybrid system with batteries to store power. The high costs of these complete systems mean that going totally off the grid makes little financial sense for households, says Yelland.
There are a host of companies offering solar solutions but before you approach them, make sure you have done your research into the pros and cons of each system.
Join the self-sustainability revolution
Sustainability is the ability to exist and develop without depleting natural resources for the future.
Imagine a world in which you do not have to rely on anyone for your needs. Eskom outages, water failures, less-than-fresh fruit and veg in stores and other challenges that add to the stress of modern living would simply be shrugged off because you have created a bubble of self-sustainability.
People are increasingly going back to the basics of growing their food, minimising their reliance on state services and reducing their carbon footprint. Isn’t it time you embarked on your self-sustainability journey? It starts with baby steps and leads to a lifestyle revolution.
