NATIONAL NEWS AND VIDEO - Western Cape minister of transport Bonginkosi Madikizela is on the scene where a provincial female traffic officer was shot this morning.
The minister, who is currently in the Garden Route on a visit to assess compliance with Covid-19 regulations in long distance transport and taxi ranks, said he had to stop in George to find out exactly what happened. He is on his way to Plettenberg Bay.
In an interview with the George Herald, Madikizela said he is angered by this incident. "When you hear that one of the people who wake up every morning to make sure that we are safe on the road was suddenly shot... the way that it happened... Thank God she is alive and stable. I'm hoping that the people who are responsible for this, will feel the full might of the law. The police moved swiftly and I trust that the other two suspects will be found and arrested. I can't at this stage reveal too much of what I have been told."
Madikizela will be back in George on Sunday as part of his visit to the region and hopes to also visit the injured officer.
Part of Madikizela's visit includes attending roadblocks in Bitou, Knysna, George and Mossel Bay, to check that long distance transport vehicles are complying with the 70% loading regulations, as well as compliance inspections at local taxi ranks.
The minister is to meet with various transport stakeholders and officially open a government vehicle pool facility in George on Monday, 10 August.
