GREAT BRAK RIVER NEWS - A number of works by internationally acclaimed sculptor Anton Smit are on display in Great Brak.
It was through a collaborative effort that Smit's works were secured for exhibition in Great Brak and they will be on show there for at least three years. Smit has had a long and illustrious career.
He first drew notable acclaim in 1977. He has exhibited worldwide and has a number of accolades and prizes to his name. Smit's works form part of public and private collections throughout South Africa and internationally.
On 8 December, after months of planning as part of a tourism initiative for Great Brak River, eight works by Smit were erected in the town as part of a new art route.
The project was initiated and managed by locals Laurinda Smit and Heleen Coertze.
Four of the sculptures - Crouching Man, In Moment - Series V, In Moment - Series II and Die Verlange can be viewed in Morrison Road, opposite the Transkaroo and Opispoor restaurants.
The Great Brak River and the sea are the backdrop to these sculptures.
Agape - Effervescent Series, which comprises three sculptures, was set up in Long Street, opposite Peperboom restaurant. Just down the road, Facets 11 - Bark, can be viewed at Art@39Long.
These sculptures will remain in Great Brak River for at least three years. Adding sculptures in the vicinity during 2022 to expand the current art route is in the pipeline.
A spokesperson for the art route project said: "To be able to exhibit Smit's unique work here is an enormous privilege and of immeasurable value to the area, its people and visitors.
"The sculptures represent hope, communication and involvement with the viewer.
"Nothing is impossible when a community stands together to make a dream come true. Thank you to everyone who made this possible."
