MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality announced that the breaching committee, at a meeting held on 5 April, decided to commence work at the Great Brak River estuary in preparation for adverse weather events predicted for the weekend.
It said work is expected to commence today, 6 April from midday.
Heavy vehicles and machinery will be operational near and on the beach. Closure of public access to the beach and parking areas are imminent for safety reasons.
"Based on the information at hand (the Wolwedans Dam level, the estuary water level, the South African Weather Service warnings forecasting disruptive rainfall for the area between 6-9 April) it was agreed that the Great Brak estuary berm will be skimmed in a focussed area.
"This will be done to alleviate potential flooding in low lying areas due to water rise in the estuary. The berm (focussed area) will be between 40m-80m wide and will be below the 2m amsl. Sand will be moved to the east and to the west of the estuary mouth in to protect the area from predicted wave action," said the municipality.
The municipality further said two possible events are being mitigated: the potential flooding as result of a cut-off low this weekend with high wave action expected, as well as high wave and swell events in the longer term.
"Potential exposure of houses in low lying areas to the risk from the high wave impact/storm surge and flooding is still possible, due to their location within a high-risk area."
