MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Provincial traffic officers of the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) had their hands full the past week, 26 November to 2 December.
They arrested 57 road users in the whole of the Western Cape, 40 of them for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.
One of the five arrests for reckless and negligent driving were made in Mossel Bay. Another local driver was arrested for speeding. The highest breath alcohol reading recorded by provincial officers was 1,28 mg/ 1 000 ml in the Knysna service area, five times the legal limit of 0,24mg/1 000 ml.
"As we head into the festive season, motorists are reminded that alcohol and roads don't mix. DUI is a serious risk to drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Remember that DUI is a serious criminal offence and that a DUI conviction may badly affect you for the rest of your life," said Jandré Bakker, head of communication at the DTPW.
A total of 2 093 speeding offences were recorded, more than double the previous week's 886. A total of 2 093 fines amounting to R4 199 650 were issued for various traffic violations.
