MOSSEL BAY NEWS - One of Mossel Bay's education institutions, Kids' Kingdom Pre-School and Primary School, co-ordinated community members to assist the relief efforts for Knysna after the fires and they did up to 52 hours of volunteer work.
The volunteers drove through to the Sedgefield collection points to help organise, sort, pack, load and off-load the huge volumes of charitable goods that came in from all over the country, for distribution to the victims of the fires in Knysna and surrounds.
It is believed the community of Mossel Bay has been strengthened by the tragic events because people from all walks of life pulled together. A mother of two who's house almost went up in flames at Village on Sea estate in Mossel Bay was in awe of the volunteers who helped fight the fires surrounding her home.
"Everyone was incredibly brave and fought the towering flames like true heroes. There were more than 20 volunteers with water tanks on their bakkies, doing their best to help us. I'll never forget men from all walks of life on my driveway, helping to protect our home in the face of massive flames. "It was like a movie. I feel differently about the people of this town now. I think this is what ubuntu is supposed to be.
Mossel Bay residents showed what ubuntu is all about when people from all walks of life assisted those affected by the fires in June.
"When my children drive past the burnt, devastated areas surrounding us and express fear about the fires coming back, I just remind them of the local heroes who helped keep the flames away. Then we all feel better."
