MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A handful of community members from Asla Park attended the monthly council meeting on Thursday, 31 May and silently protested the fact that they were not given a chance to provide input into the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) at public meetings.
At least three people held placards, asking for an opportunity for the community to state their needs and for those needs to be included in the IDP.
They specifically expressed their need for:
• Serviced land to accommodate people now living in backyards and for land to be made available for informal settlements;
• Land closer to town for easier access to transport, municipal services and infrastructure; and
• Serviced land for the informal settlements specifically to be properly organised.
They expressed their dissatisfaction in a press release about the lack of land for informal settlements and rued the fact that valuable land is earmarked for a cemetery, even a refuse site, but not for housing.
The protesters asked that council revert to them within 14 days.
